He was Senior Commodity Specialist for dimension stone and graphite for the U.S. Bureau of Mines from 1980 to 1995, making on-site visits to over 70 dimension stone operations in the U.S. (in 25 states), plus 30 in Italy, many in Brazil, Spain, and elsewhere. Taylor has been President of Basics/Mines, his consulting group, since 1995. He was Chair of the Subcommittee on Nomenclature, for ASTM Committee C18 on Dimension Stone 1987-2004. He is the author of the Graphite chapter in the Kirk-Othmer Chemical Encyclopedia and the Graphite report in the about-to-be-published Industrial Minerals and Rocks (SME).
